Overview
The Staff of the Curriculum Department works to serve teachers, administrators, and parents of HISD in providing relevant, aligned curricula, academic and instructional leadership, and professional development opportunities for the delivery of effective instruction which enhances learning and improves achievement for all students.
Based upon the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), Henderson ISD's curriculum provides a framework for all instruction that takes place within its classrooms. We believe that it is important for all administrators, teachers, students, and parents to have an understanding of what each student is expected to learn at specific intervals during their academic career in Henderson. Therefore, the Director of Curriculum, principals, and classroom teachers have collaborated to produce a scope and sequence of instruction and benchmark assessments for each core subject area.
Programs administered include the following:
Core Curriculum
Math
Science
English Language Arts/Reading
Social Studies/Economics
Health
Physical Education
Fine Arts

Special Programs
Title I, Part A - Improving Basic Programs Operated by Local Education Agencies
Gifted and Talented - For children who perform at or show the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment.
State Compensatory Education- Compensatory education is defined in law as programs and/or services designed to supplement the regular education program for students identified as at risk of dropping out of school. The purpose is to increase the academic achievement and reduce the drop out rate of these students. The goal of state compensatory education is to reduce any disparity in performance on assessment instruments administered under Subchapter B, Chapter 39, or disparity in the rates of high school completion between students at risk of dropping out of school and all other district students. Testing
The Curriculum Department is also responsible for oversight of the administration of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). These assessments are given to various populations at designated times throughout the year. The state accumulates the data from these assessments and rates each district according to its results. Below are items of interest which relate to TAKS testing.
Grant Administration
The Curriculum Department is also responsible for the administration of grant funds. We seek to ensure that each district activity supported through grant revenue meets the intent of the funding source and is in full compliance with all applicable policies and regulations. Further, we commit to assist district employees in successfully seeking, obtaining and administering competitive grants for the benefit of staff and students. Congratulations to the following campuses and/or departments that have won competitive grants.
Henderson ISD and the Boys and Girls Club of Rusk County
21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant
*The purpose of the Texas 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program is to provide opportunities beyond the normal school day for communities to establish or expand activities in community learning centers that: (1) provide opportunities for academic enrichment, including providing tutorial services to help children, particularly students who attend low performing schools, to meet State and local student academic achievement standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and mathematics; (2) offer students a broad array of additional services, programs and activities, such as youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, counseling programs, art, music, and physical education and fitness programs, and technology education programs that are designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program of participating students; and (3) offer families of students served by community learning centers opportunities for literacy and related educational development. Program services must be offered only when schools are not in session (i.e. before or after school, during holidays or summer recess). Grant funds provide funding for tutorial services by highly qualified HISD teachers and other enrichment activities for students who attend the Boys and Girls Club after school and during the summer months.
